AYURVEDA & Massages

WHAT IS AYURVEDA

Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. It focuses on balancing the body's energies, known as doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), to maintain health and prevent diseases. Ayurveda is more than just a medical system; it is a way of life that provides knowledge on how to live a healthy and balanced life. It views each person as a unique individual and, when illness occurs, seeks to address the root cause rather than merely treating the symptoms, as is common in Western medicine. For example, instead of simply taking a painkiller for a headache, Ayurveda looks at underlying factors like diet & lifestyle. Ayurveda is a vast and complex subject, too extensive to cover in just one section on my website. However, I can recommend books if you would like to explore it further.

UNIQUE FEATURES OF AYURVEDA

  • Remedies are free from toxicities

  • Remedies are often found in the kitchen and are cost-effective

  • Recognizes the deep connection between the body and mind

  • Emphasizes living in harmony with nature (e.g., seasonal diets)

  • Offers a variety of treatments for a single disease

TRIDOSHA CONCEPT

To understand Ayurveda, we first need to recognize the five great elements (Pancha Mahabhuta):

  • Aakash (Space)

  • Vayu (Air)

  • Agni (Fire)

  • Jala (Water)

  • Prithvi (Earth)

When these elements combine, they give rise to the Tridosha concept—the three fundamental energies that govern both the mind and body.

3 different doshas

  • Vata (Space & Air) – Responsible for movement, circulation, and nerve impulses.

  • Pitta (Fire & Water) – Governs digestion, metabolism, and transformation.

  • Kapha (Water & Earth) – Provides the muscular system, lubrication, and strength

VATA

PITTA

KAPHA

Each dosha has its own unique qualities and functions, influencing everything from bodily processes to personality traits. The Tridosha concept extends beyond the body—it can be seen in nature, seasons, times of the day, and even geographical locations. For example:

  • Autumn is a Vata season (dry, cool, and windy).

  • Summer is a Pitta season (hot, intense, and fiery).

  • Winter is a Kapha season (cold, heavy, and moist).

  • Even different times of the day align with Vata, Pitta, and Kapha energies.

Your dominant dosha is determined by factors like your physical features, behavior, birth details, and genetics. Understanding your dosha helps you live a more balanced and healthy life, as it can indicate which health issues you may be prone to. I can guide you with personalized diet and lifestyle recommendations based on your dosha to help you achieve optimal well-being.

AYURVEDIC SERVICES

Dosha consultation

During a 90-minute consultation, I will help you determine your dosha and gain deeper insight into your unique constitution. This process includes a detailed questionnaire covering various aspects of your lifestyle, health, and habits.

I completed my Ayurvedic massage therapist training in India in January 2025, where I learned traditional techniques and holistic healing practices rooted in authentic Ayurveda. Understanding your dosha allows me to provide personalized recommendations, including the most suitable massage, diet, and lifestyle choices to restore balance. My recommendations focus on the right foods for your dosha (based on taste and effect, not on counting calories or weight loss!!) and lifestyle adjustments, such as exercise.

For example, Pitta individuals naturally have a lot of fire in them. Excessive cardio can lead to overheating and imbalance, so they should limit intense workouts to a maximum of 45 minutes per day to maintain harmony.

MASSAGES

Ayurveda strongly emphasizes keeping the body balanced and lubricated through the application of oil. Massages play a significant role in Ayurvedic treatments, helping to restore harmony and promote overall well-being. Each dosha requires oils tailored to its needs. The types of massages mostly remain the same across doshas, but the choice of oil varies depending on your individual imbalances

For example, Vata individuals tend to have drier skin, so they require more oil and a higher repetition of the same movements. You can also book a massage without a consultation, in which case I will use a neutral oil that is suitable for all three doshas.
